1. Visit https://support.broadcom.com 2. On the upper right corner of the screen, click Register. Create a username/password using your Loyola email address. 3. Once your username is created, go back to https://support.broadcom.com and log in. 4. On the dashboard menu (left side of page) click My Downloads. This brings up a page with an informational bar that says "Free Software Downloads available HERE." Click that link. https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/free-downloads 5. (a) If you're using a Windows PC, search for "Workstation" in the Free Downloads menu. Download VMware Workstation Pro. Get the latest version (currently 25H2). (b) If you're using a Mac, search for "Fusion" in the Free Downloads menu. Download VMware Fusion. Get the latest version (currently 25H2). 6. Run the installer program. Instructions for creating a new VM: 1. Once you've downloaded VMware and open it for the first time, you'll create a new VM. In VMware Fusion, you'll drag-drop the installation disk image for Gentoo (or Arch) onto the window where it says "Install from disc or image." You can get installation disk images from the link below. If you have an x86 PC, get the amd64 Minimal Installation CD. If you have an Apple Silicon Mac, get the arm64 Minimal Installation CD. NOTE: IF YOU DOWNLOAD THE INSTALLATION CD FOR THE WRONG ARCHITECTURE, YOUR VM WON'T BOOT. https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/ 2. Click "Continue" to progress through the wizard. When it asks what guest operating system you are installing, choose "Other Linux 6.x Kernel" 3. On the last window, right before clicking Finish, click the Customize Settings button. This should ask you to save your VM, then you'll need to customize the resources allocated to your VM. (a) Under Processors and Memory, give your VM as many processors as you can (at least 4). Also under Processors and Memory, give it at least 4 GB (4096 MB) of memory. If you have 32 GB of memory on your laptop, you can give your VM 8 GB (8192 MB) of memory. (b) Under Hard Disk, give your VM at least 40 GB of disk space. 4. Close the settings customization window, and click the Play button (sideways triangle) on the black VM window to start it. From here you should be able to follow the Gentoo install instructions (https://os.neilklingensmith.com).
